Story 1
I’m deeply grateful for your empathy, guidance, and valuable support during those difficult days. You helped us move forward. Such wonderful work you do.
Many individuals within the Indus community have experienced family violence while also navigating the challenges of starting life in a new country.
For those forcibly displaced by war, persecution, and trauma, Indus provides a place of safety, healing, and new beginnings.
I’m deeply grateful for your empathy, guidance, and valuable support during those difficult days. You helped us move forward. Such wonderful work you do.
We have a 12-year history with the Indus day program. My parents—and now just my mother—attend twice a week. The program’s impact has been tremendous. .For me, Indus means peace of mind. It means knowing that mom is in great hands while I work and get on with my daily life. I know that she is safe and engaged when she is in the program. She absolutely loves the singing and dancing. She also loves the friendships and laughter with staff and other program participants. The daily exercises help keep her strong and mobile. She always comes home happy. Coping with memory loss has been a real struggle for her, but the staff help her feel reassured. They treat her like family. Indus celebrates South Asian culture through food, music and conversation. That daily connection to her heritage brings her a very important sense of belonging. I also like the hand and foot care services they make available. Indus has given our family a sense of balance. We are deeply grateful.
“A client from over seas sought settlement support and mental health services while she was living in temporary accommodations. A Settlement Counsellor provided her with housing application assistance, orientation to access health care and referral for mental health supports. Through access to healthcare and support from Settlement services, the client gradually developed coping strategies for her trauma-related symptoms stemming from her domestic violence experience and loss of family in the past year. Over time, the client regained a sense of stability. Today, she is a resilient and an active member of her community and continues to prioritize her well-being.”
“An internationally trained and experienced professional, referred in-house from our Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) classes was struggling to find employment. He was depressed and disappointed with his employment situation. The Indus Community Employment Services team supported him with a wide range of employment services, including resume critique, job search workshops, interview preparation, networking opportunities and employer connections. He was hired full-time in his profession at the Toronto Pearson Airport.”
“I came to this country less than a year ago and the volunteer has taught me that practicing a new language is far from being stressful, and is something very fun. He has become my friend, supporting me in the ups and downs that I have faced throughout this process. Being a newcomer and having a mentor like him makes me feel so blessed!”
“For years, she stayed because she believed things would get better. The emotional and psychological abuse had slowly taken away her confidence, and she feared what would happen if she left. But one night, with her children by her side, she made the bravest decision of her life. When the family arrived at Indus’ Family Services program, they were afraid and unsure where to begin. With support and compassion, they found safety, counselling, and the stability they had been missing. Over time, they became hopeful. The children began to laugh again. She began to believe in herself. Today, they are thriving and surrounded by community. Their story is one of courage, healing, and the power of starting over with the support of our Family Services team at Indus.”
